Money · the complete answer

How do tourists actually pay in Laos?

The short answer

Bring cash — cards barely exist here. But Laos quietly solved the tourist payment problem: download LOCA PAY (your foreign Visa/Mastercard, or Apple Pay, can scan any Lao QR) or BCEL's EzyKip before your trip, and you'll pay like a local almost everywhere. The fee — about 3% + 5,000 kip — comes from you, not the shop.

The three layers of money here

Layer 1 — Cash (still the king). Kip for everything small; USD and THB accepted for exchange everywhere and sometimes directly at borders. Withdraw big and rarely — ATM fees are per-transaction.

Layer 2 — Lao QR (the local way). Every shop, café and hotel has a QR code that pulls straight from a Lao bank account. As a foreigner you can't scan it with a normal banking app — which brings us to the bridge apps.

Layer 3 — The bridges (your phone). LOCA PAY (inside the LOCA app) lets you link a foreign Visa or Mastercard — or Apple Pay / Google Pay — and scan any bank's Lao QR, at over a million points of sale. EzyKip is BCEL's version. Both charge you, the tourist, roughly 3% + a small flat fee; the shop pays nothing and just sees a normal payment.

Why you can trust this page: it's written by a company that runs a Lao payment gateway — the same rail that sells the lagoon tickets on this site. When a tourist pays one of our QR codes through LOCA PAY, we see it land exactly like a local payment. That's how we know the bridge works.

The honest small print

  • Leftover kip is a one-way ticket. Nearly impossible to exchange outside Laos — spend it down or keep a note as a souvenir.
  • Small notes vanish fast. Tuk-tuks and markets can't break a ⭘100,000 — hoard small bills.
  • Apple Pay / Google Pay don't work directly at Lao shops — they work inside LOCA PAY as your funding card.
  • Mastercard acceptance is thinner than Visa wherever cards are taken at all.

Questions people also ask

Can I pay by credit card in Laos?
Rarely. Hotels and higher-end restaurants in Vientiane and Luang Prabang sometimes take cards; almost everywhere else — tuk-tuks, lagoon gates, street food, small guesthouses — is cash or Lao QR.
How does a foreign tourist pay with a Lao QR code?
Lao QR normally needs a Lao bank account, but two apps bridge that for tourists: LOCA PAY (link a foreign Visa/Mastercard, or Apple Pay/Google Pay, and scan any bank's QR — about 3% + 5,000 kip per transaction, paid by you not the shop) and BCEL's EzyKip. Install one before you need it.
Should I bring cash? Which currency?
Yes — bring USD or THB (clean, undamaged notes) and exchange in town, or withdraw kip from ATMs. ATMs charge a fee per withdrawal (typically ⭘20,000–40,000), so withdraw fewer, larger amounts. Leftover kip is hard to exchange outside Laos — don't over-withdraw at the end of your trip.
How much cash do I need per day?
A backpacker gets by on roughly $25–35/day (guesthouse, street food, shared transport); comfort travelers on $50–80. Tuk-tuks, gates, lagoons and most meals are cash-or-QR territory.
What's the exchange rate and where should I change money?
The kip floats around 20,000–22,500 to the dollar (check a live rate before you go). Town exchange shops and banks beat the airport; gold shops in some towns also change at decent rates.
