What the sky does, month by month

November–February: the prime window — 15–25°C days, cold nights in the north-facing guesthouses, air so clear the karst looks painted. Balloon flights at their most reliable; book the train early, everyone had this idea.

March–mid April: the honest warning — burning-season haze plus 35–40°C afternoons. The valley is still beautiful and the crowds thin, but this is the one season we won't oversell to you.

May–October: the green season. One dramatic afternoon downpour most days, mornings bright, the valley at its lushest and rooms at their cheapest. August is the wettest; the lagoons run emerald instead of neon blue.

Planning around the sky: whatever the season, the rule is the same — viewpoints and lagoons in the morning, caves and cafés for the wet or hot hours, the river at dusk. The 2–3 day plan is already built that way.

Questions people also ask

When is the best weather in Vang Vieng?
November to February — cool, dry, clear air, balloon-perfect mornings. March to mid-April brings burning-season haze and 35–40°C heat; May–October is the rainy season (short, heavy afternoon bursts, lush green valley); the shoulder months of May and September–October balance decent weather with thin crowds.
Does it rain all day in the rainy season?
Rarely. Rainy-season Vang Vieng typically delivers one intense afternoon downpour, then clears. Mornings are usually dry — plan lagoons and viewpoints early, keep a café for the wet hour, and watch the river rise rather than the sky.
What is the smoke season in Laos?
Roughly late February to mid-April, farmers burn fields and the haze settles over the valleys — air quality drops badly exactly when the heat peaks. It's the one season we tell travelers to think twice about, honestly and early.
